Lives You Help Transform
A glimpse into the remarkable impact of our programs.
Ndindai Rokore is eighteen years old and belongs to the nomadic pastoralist Maasai tribe in Magadi, Kenya. She is the eighth child among ten siblings and the only one born with a cleft lip. Ndindai recalls being shy due to her facial defect. She mainly stayed at home, and always covered her mouth when she ventured out.
Eight-year-old Fadumo Nuur and her mother travelled an arduous 12-hour journey from Galgadud, central Somalia, to a hospital in Mogadishu for cleft lip repair surgery. Her mother was determined to get Fadumo the life-changing surgery and care she needed.
Born with a cleft and cleft palate, Nuur was a laughing stalk of his village, people used to refer to him as “faruro”, someone with split lips. Nuur accepted his condition and got used to people calling him names, although sometimes it was too much to bare.
Ahmed Abdirahman’s cleft lip was repaired when he was 7 years old, this only meant that he had some of the most difficult years of his life.
Sitting in class absorbed in his class work, 10 year old Ayub Chacha is a happy kid. One cannot tell the torture he has gone through. He is deeply engrossed in his books surrounded by friends.
